Missing a municipal court date or ignoring a fine can make a New Jersey traffic ticket much worse. Here is what the NJ Courts say, and what to do next.

What can happen

Failure to appear, not paying fines, or not following a sentence can bring additional fines, license suspension, and arrest or jail.

What to do if you missed it

  1. Find your ticket in NJMC Direct with the court ID, ticket number and license number, or use the Municipal Court Case Search.
  2. Contact the municipal court that handles your ticket. If you are not sure which court, NJ Courts lists 609-421-6100.
  3. Ask about a new court date. You can request a different date, and court staff will send it to your contact details.
  4. If you cannot pay in full, ask about time payments. NJ Courts says you are entitled to installments if you cannot pay at sentencing or within 30 days.

FAQ

Can I fix this online? Some steps, like finding a ticket, paying when no appearance is required, or requesting a new date, are available through NJMC Direct.

Do I need a lawyer? Not always. A public defender may be available through the court. This site does not give legal advice.
