Do you have to go to court for a New Jersey traffic ticket, or can you just pay it? The answer depends on one box on your ticket. Here is what the NJ Courts say, in plain words.

What does "Court Appearance Required" mean on a NJ ticket?

Look at your complaint (the ticket). If the "Court Appearance Required" box has not been checked, and the charge is on the Statewide Violations Bureau Schedule or the Local Violations Bureau Schedule, you may pay the fine without going to court.

  • The Statewide Violations Bureau Schedule is a list of state offenses that may be paid without going to court.
  • The Local Violations Schedule is a list of municipal ordinances that may be paid without going to court.

If the box is checked, or the charge is not on a schedule, plan to appear. Court appearances are always required in criminal matters.

How can you pay without going to court?

When no appearance is required, the NJ Courts say you can pay in three ways:

  1. At the court's payment window.
  2. By mail.
  3. Online at NJMCdirect.com. For these offenses, NJMCdirect can also show the total amount you must pay if you plead guilty and pay.

What do you give up if you pay?

The NJ Courts are clear on this: if you pay without going to court, you are pleading guilty and giving up your right to a lawyer and your right to a trial. If you are not sure you want that, read our guide on paying or pleading not guilty before you pay.
