NJ Defensive Driving Course: Remove 2 Points in 2026
New Jersey lets you remove 2 points from your driving record by completing an MVC-approved defensive driving course - but only once every 5 years, and only if you have points on your record when you finish. Here is how it works.

How many points does a defensive driving course remove in NJ?
Two points. The course must be a New Jersey State-approved defensive driving curriculum - check with the provider before you register, because out-of-state or unapproved courses do not count.
Who is eligible for the 2-point reduction?
Any NJ driver with points currently on their record. You can use the reduction only once every 5 years. If your record has zero points when you complete the course, you get no credit.
How do the points actually come off?
You do not send anything yourself. The course provider notifies the NJ MVC with proof of completion, usually within 7 to 10 business days. Certificates submitted by the driver are not accepted - the provider must report it.
Is defensive driving the same as the Driver Improvement Program?
No. The defensive driving course is voluntary and removes 2 points. The Driver Improvement Program (3 points removed) and Probationary Driver Program are MVC-mandated classroom programs for drivers facing suspension - a defensive driving course is not a substitute for them.
